Aerial, ground and chemigation spray deposition on corn for the control of spodoptera frugiperda (lepidoptera: noctuidae) Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Cunha,João Paulo Arantes Rodrigues da; Nascimento,Ana Paula de Castro.
Pesticides can be applied by aircraft, ground-sprayers or sprinkler irrigation. However, selecting the best option is complicated by the limited number of studies comparing these techniques. Thus, the objective of this work was to study the chlorpyrifos insecticide deposition applied by aircraft (30 L ha-1), tractor-mounted sprayer (200 L ha-1) and chemigation (70,000 L ha-1) for the control of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) in two corn (Zea mays L.) populations (70,000 and 100,000 plants ha-1). Active ingredient residue on the corn plant leaves was evaluated by gas chromatography, immediately and ten days after the treatments. Armyworm numbers in each plot and control were also evaluated. The experiment was set up in randomized blocks with four...

Application rate trials with a nuclear polyhedrosis virus to control Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) on maize Anais da SEB
Cruz,Ivan; Figueiredo,Maria L. C.; Valicente,Fernando H.; Oliveira,António C..
Different concentrations of nuclear polyhedrosis virus were applied as aqueous suspensions using a tractor mounted or a backpack-manual sprayer to control Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) larvae on maize (Zea mays L.). Larval mortality varied with the application equipment. For the tractor-mounted sprayer application of at least 2.5 x 10(12) P.I.B./ha was necessary to attain a control comparable to that obtained with the backpack-manual sprayer application (70.2%). For this application method it can be used the dose of 2.5 x 10(11) PI.B./ ha, butNPV persistence was very short. A greaterNPV persistence was obtained with doses over 1.25 x 10(12) P.I.B./ha (93.4% mortality). The occurrence of parasitoids in the experimental area increased larval mortality rate...

Effectiveness of Bacillus thuringiensis strains against Spodoptera frugiperda (lepidoptera: noctuidae) BJM
Polanczyk,Ricardo Antonio; Silva,Rogério Fernando Pires da; Fiuza,Lidia Mariana.
The fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is one of the most important pests of maize, causing up to 20% production losses when defoliation occurs near to flowering, or even complete destruction of plants. Among the alternatives to control this pest, the use of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) has gained attention due to its efficiency and low impact on natural enemies. Strains Bt dendrolimus HD 37, Bt aizawai HD 68, Bt kurstaki HD 73, Bt darmstadiensis HD 146, and Bt thuringiensis 4412 were tested against second instar larvae in in vivo assays. Suspensions of Bt aizawai HD 68 and Bt thuringiensis 4412, containing 3 x 10(8) cells/ml, induced mortality of 100% and 80.4%, respectively. To test virulence, cell concentrations of 8 x 10(5) to 3 x 10(8) cells/ml of...

Histological and Histochemical Changes by Clove Essential Oil Upon the Gonads of Spodoptera frugiperda (JE Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) International Journal of Morphology
Cruz,Glaucilane dos Santos; Teixeira,Valeria Wanderley; de Oliveira,Jose Vargas; Teixeira,Alvaro Aguiar Coelho; Araújo,Alicely Correia; Alves,Thiago Jose de Souza; da Cunha,Franklin Magliano; Breda,Mariana Oliveira.
Spodoptera frugiperda is a polyphagous insect that causes economic losses to several crops in Brazil and is the major obstacle to corn production. Researches focusing on alternative control, e.g. botanical products are expanding to offer a wide variety of molecules that interfere with different biological parameters of insect pests. Thus, this study tested the hypothesis that clove essential oil affects the spermatogenesis, ovarioles histochemistry and the fertility of S. frugiperda. The results showed that clove essential oil affects the gametogenesis of S. frugiperda ovarioles, reflecting negatively on its reproduction, proving to be a promising tool for controlling this pest.
